Even in general the backgrounds look absolutely gorgeous like when SpongeBob is walking depressedly or when the two of them are walking to the Thug Tug after crossing the county line.
These places look beautiful and it makes the movie feel more special and grandiose.
Places such as the Goofy Goober store, the Thug Tug, the trench and Shell City itself. And let's not forget the intricately detailed backgrounds which do a brilliant job at capturing the underwater theme of the show, as well as the well-designed set pieces in this movie. I absolutely dig the change in style used for the movie for the characters and whatnot. The movement is much more fluid than the original show and the facial expressions are more frequent and expressive. Yes, this movie's animation is absolutely brilliant. However the journey in this movie is kept engaging, thanks to this movie's stunning animation. This show has shown that it can tell all these really cool stories, yet it's theatrical film ends up being the cliche hero's journey which is supposed to satisfy those who aren't fans of the show, but it instead ended up satisfying no one. A perfect example would be " My Little Pony: The Movie".

For some reason whenever TV shows opt to have theoretical films, they seem to go with the generic and cliche "Hero's Journey" trope as their main story. But why is that? Well, let's find out.įirst of all, this movie's story is a cliche. I always just felt something was wrong about it. Believe it or not, I don't have any nostalgic value for this movie either, because as a matter of fact I actually didn't like this movie as a kid. In fact I'd go as far as to say it's one of the worst things the show's original run has to offer. Yeah, I don't understand how I used to review things before either, but my point still stands. Okay, well the rating has changed from meh to good now, but to be fair in my review I did say the movie was "entertaining with decent comedy", which nowadays would translate to a good rating. You can see with my Seasons 1-3 scorecard how much I have softened up to the show overtime, yet in spite of that my opinion on the movie has remained mostly unchanged. I went from someone who tried to act like another cynical critic that would mostly copy the popular consensus while sprinkling in a few unpopular ones here and there, to someone who watches the show to enjoy it with the reviews reflecting why I enjoy these episodes while often defending a lot of episodes which are looked down upon. And throughout those two-and-a-half years, I have changed a lot especially in the way I review this show.
When I first started using this site, I started copying my old Season 1 reviews from Google Docs onto here, but this was the first review which I premiered on DeviantArt. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie has a special place in my heart, in that it was the first new review which I posted on DeviantArt. Quote: “Manager!
